KINGSTON, R.I. The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its Inaugural Class, which will be inducted into the new hall of fame on October 4, 2002 in Keaney Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.
Notable selections include all-time NBA greats Bob Cousy and Tom Heinsohn (Holy Cross), Calvin Murphy (Norwalk High School), Johnny Egan (Weaver High School), Patrick Ewing (Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School) and Julius Erving (University of Massachusetts); WNBA stars Rebecca Lobo, Svetlana Abrosimova, Kara Wolters and Nykesha Sales (Connecticut) and Allison Feaster (Harvard); all-time coaching greats Joe Mullaney and Dave Gavitt (Providence), Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma (Connecticut), Andy Laska (Assumption), Kathy Delaney-Smith (Westwood High School), Ron Perry, Sr. (Catholic Memorial), and Dee Rowe (Worcester Prep); regional high school legends Cindy Blodgett (Lawrence High), Kerry Bascom (Epping), Ernie Calverly (Pawtucket), Joe Harrington (Morse), and Henry Dalrymple (St. Johnsbury Academy). Great teams including National Champions Holy Cross Men (1947), Connecticut Women (1995), Nashua High School Girls (1987), UMass-Lowell Men (1988) and New Haven Women (1987) will also be inducted. The Boston Celtics will be inducted in the organization category and broadcasting legend Johnny Most and the award-winning writer Bob Ryan will be inducted in the media category. The Hall will also include three very special inductions in the Special Olympian, deaf player, and wheelchair athlete categories.
Dan Doyle, the founder and executive director of the Institute for International Sport at URI, conceived the idea for the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Doyle said, "Our most important objective was to honor a wide variety of individuals and teams whose contributions have been vital to the New England basketball story. Were extremely proud to be able to induct competitive players, coaches and teams from all levels of the game. As importantly, were proud to induct a Special Olympian, a hearing impaired athlete and a wheelchair competitor. This is truly a complete representation of the game in New England.
The all-day induction celebration will begin with a celebrity golf tournament at 9:00 am. At 5:00 pm a dinner reception will be held in the new Ryan Center. At 7:00 pm, legendary recording artists The Drifters will perform a one-hour concert. Immediately following the concert will be the introduction of the first class of inductees. Tickets for the event are expected to sell-out and are available for a limited time by calling 401-874-2375.
For the first year, inductees were selected in specific categories. High school boys, girls, coaches and teams were selected by state. College Division I, II, III, Junior College, and Prepatory School categories were selected without regard for state affiliation. Special inductee categories were also considered regionally and included referees, organizations, members of the media, contributors and individual selections from Special Olympics, deaf competitors, wheelchair athletes, and the youth/volunteer category.
Nominations from each of the six New England states came from an appointed Nomination Committee and from members of the media. The nominations were then passed on to the Selection Committee, which is comprised of three people from each state and four at-large members. Proceeds from the induction dinner will be used to fund the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and expand the Institute for International Sport's sportsmanship programs in New England. The Institute currently sponsors National Sportsmanship Day every March, which now involves more than six million students in all 50 states and approximately 100 countries.
