NEW ENGLAND BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME NAMES CLASS OF 2003 INDUCTEES NEW ENGLAND DREAM TEAM II INCLUDES LENNY WILKENS, RAY ALLEN, JEN RIZZOTTI, RICK PITINO, AND SUE BIRD

KINGSTON, R.I., July 17 – The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its 2003 Class, which will be inducted on September 19 in the Ryan Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

Notable selections include present and former NBA stars Travis Best (Springfield Commerce), Caron Butler (Maine Central Institute), Mike Gminski (Masuk High School), Joe Hassett (LaSalle High School), the late Reggie Lewis (Northeastern University), Marvin Barnes (Providence College), Tony Lavelli (Somerville High School), Togo Palazzi (Holy Cross), and Lenny Wilkens (Providence College). WNBA stars Jen Rizzotti and Sue Bird will also be inducted. Coaching greats Hugh Greer (Connecticut), George Blaney (Holy Cross), Buster Sheary (Holy Cross), Rick Pitino (Providence College), Paula Sullivan (Stonehill), and Cathy Inglese (Boston College/Vermont) will also be inducted. The non-playing/coaching category inductees include broadcasting pioneer Chris Clark, referee Charlie Diehl, and contributors Ken Hudson, Alfreda Harris, Joe Vancisin, and the ECAC among others. National Championship teams from Connecticut College, Sacred Heart University and the University of Connecticut will also join the list of honorees.

Dan Doyle, the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for International Sport at URI, conceived the idea for the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Doyle said, " Our most important objective was to honor a wide variety of individuals and teams whose contributions have been vital to the New England basketball story. This class of inductees is every bit as compelling as the first class. One of the best parts of this project is being able to tell people of their selection.”

The all-day induction celebration will begin with a celebrity golf tournament at 9:00 am at Beaver River Country Club in Richmond, R.I. The Induction activities will begin with a cocktail reception at the Institute for International Sport before moving to the Ryan Center for the dinner reception, silent auction, and Induction Ceremony. Last year’s events drew nearly 1000 people. Tickets for the events are available by calling 401-874-2375.

Inductees were selected in specific categories. High school boys, girls, coaches and teams were selected by state. College Division I, II, III, Junior College, and Prepatory School categories were selected without regard for state affiliation. Special inductee categories were also considered regionally and included referees, organizations, members of the media, contributors, semi-professional players and individual selections from Special Olympics, deaf competitors, wheelchair athletes, and the youth/volunteer category.

Nominations from each of the six New England states came from an appointed Nomination Committee and from members of the media. The nominations were then passed on to the Selection Committee, which includes four people from each state and five ‘at-large’ members. Proceeds from the induction dinner, the golf outing and the silent auction will be used to fund the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and expand the Institute for International Sport's sportsmanship programs in New England. The Institute currently sponsors National Sportsmanship Day every March, which now involves more than six million students in all 50 states and approximately 100 countries.
