NEW ENGLAND BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME NAMES CLASS OF 2004
6/28/2004

NEW ENGLAND DREAM TEAM III INCLUDES RICK CARLISLE, AMBASSADOR RAY FLYNN, MARCUS CAMBY AND SWIN CASH

KINGSTON, R.I., June 25 – The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has announced its 2004 Class, which will be inducted on September 24 in the Ryan Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island. The induction is the third class for the Hall of Fame.

Notable selections include present and former professional players Marcus Camby, Manute Bol, Sam Cassell, John Bagley, Rick Carlisle, and Swin Cash, former NIT MVP Ambassador Ray Flynn, former NCAA MVP Dr. George Kaftan, Mike Gorman, the voice of the Boston Celtics, and Big East Commissioner, Mike Tranghese.

Dan Doyle, the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for International Sport at URI, conceived the idea for the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. Doyle said, " Our most important objective each year is to honor a wide variety of individuals from specific categories whose contributions have been vital to New England basketball. We believe that the stories and accomplishments from this class are every bit as riveting as those of our first two classes.’

The Induction activities begin with a cocktail reception for the inductees at the Institute for International Sport before moving to the Ryan Center for the dinner reception, memorabilia display, silent auction, and Induction Ceremony. Last year’s events drew over 800 people. Tickets for the events are available by calling 401-874-2375.

Inductees were selected in specific categories. High school boys, girls, and coaches were selected by state. College Division I, II, III, Junior College, and Prepatory School categories were selected without regard for state affiliation. Special inductee categories were also considered regionally and included referees, organizations, members of the media, contributors, semi-professional players, Special Olympians, deaf competitors, disabled athletes, administrators, youth/volunteer, and the multi-accomplishment category.

Nominations from each of the six New England states came from an appointed Nomination Committee and from members of the media. The nominations were then passed on to the Selection Committee, which includes four people from each state and five ‘at-large’ members. Proceeds from the induction dinner and the silent auction will be used to fund the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and expand the Institute for International Sport's sportsmanship programs in New England. The Institute currently sponsors National Sportsmanship Day in March, and involves more than six million students in all 50 states and 100 countries.
