The “No Swear Zone”

The “No Swear Zone” offers teams at all levels of competition the opportunity to join the “No Swear Zone” by making a team commitment – both players and coaches – to refrain from using profanity. Such a commitment equates to making a positive contribution to society by employing the admirable self-discipline – and respect for others – required to honor such a commitment.

Four Important Points to Consider

  1. Not using profanity sets a good example for others; using profanity does just the opposite.

  2. Coaches are the key! A coach who refrains from using profanity, and strongly discourages such use with all team members, is acting as a true “sports educator.”

  3. Over the long haul, people admire other people who act in a civil manner, no matter what the circumstance.

  4. Profanity often leads to hurt feelings and even acts as a precursor to violent behavior.

How to Join the “No Swear Zone”

It is simple! Simply send an e-mail indicating that your team has made a commitment to join the “No Swear Zone.”

  • Send the e-mail to James Skiff, Director of NSD – jskiff@internationalsport.com

  • Provide Chris with the following information:

    • Name and address of your school
    • Your team (including the sport)
    • The name of your head coach
    • The name of your captain(s)

Beginning on March 2, our National Sportsmanship Day, we will post the teams who have joined the “No Swear Zone” right on this website.

Make sure your team is in this very important “Zone”!
