History:
Founded by the Institute for International Sport at The University of Rhode Island, the third Irelands' Scholar-Athlete Games were based on the successful framework of its predecessors, the 1995 Belfast Scholar-Athlete Games and the 1996 Irelands' Scholar-Athlete Games.

Concept:
All scholar-athletes are divided into ethnically and culturally diverse groups, taking part in either athletic competition or cultural pursuits. For example, a soccer team or writing group may be comprised of individuals from 10 or more communities.

Participants:
More than 500 students, ages 14-19, from the United States, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and other European nations.

Sports Programs:
Basketball, field hockey, Gaelic football, rugby, soccer, swimming, track & field, volleyball.

Cultural Programs:
Art, dance, drama, journalism, music (voice, instrumental), video production.

Theme Days:
Theme Days serve as a forum to unite all participants in discussion about global issues and challenges. Led by prominent international speakers, the Theme Days addressed the topics of:

"Community Issues"
"Substance Abuse"
"World Hunger"
"Sport and the Arts as Mediums of Peace and Reconciliation (a special forum on how sport and the arts impact relationships in Northern Ireland)"
