2000 Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games "Renaissance Experience"
Dates:
A nine-day program June 17-18, June 23-24, and June 26-30, 2000.
Location:
The University of Rhode Island, Kingston.
Mission:
To encourage Rhode Island youth to pursue excellence, not only as athletes, but as scholars and artists.
To encourage youngsters to explore and undertake new and exciting activities
To provide participants the opportunity to contribute to a team effort
To facilitate the leadership qualities of Rhode Island youth.
To provide mothers and fathers with important information on sports parenting.
Concept:
All scholar-athletes contributed to a team effort, as part of either Team Athens or Team Sparta. Each participant chose a "specialty" athletic or cultural activity. On a daily basis, participants devoted significant time to their special activity and were encouraged to explore various sports and cultural activities, as part of their commitment to their team.
Every activity a scholar-athlete pursued helped his/her team score points. Activities included sports competitions and specialty contests like chess, spelling bees, scientific discovery, vocal performances, poetry, art, and sports trivia.
Participants: Scholars from across the state, ages 6-14 as of June 1, 2000. Participants were grouped by age and ability.
Sports Activities: Baseball, Basketball, Soccer and Tennis (doubles)
Cultural Activities: Art, Creative Writing, Theatre, Dance and Vocal Music
Recreational Activities: Chess, Spelling Bee, Scientific Discovery, Sports Trivia, touch football, T-Ball, Field Games and many others.
