2001 Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games "Renaissance Experience"

Dates:
June 9-10, 24 and July 30- August 3, 2001

Location:
The University of Rhode Island, Kingston and Rhode Island College, Providence

Mission:
  • To encourage Rhode Island youth to pursue excellence, not only as athletes, but as scholars and artists.
  • To encourage youngsters to explore and undertake new and exciting activities.
  • To provide participants the opportunity to contribute to a team effort.
  • To facilitate the leadership qualities of Rhode Island youth
  • To provide mothers and fathers with important information on sports parenting.

    Concept:
    All participants will contribute to a team effort, as part of either Team Athens or Team Sparta. In addition to their "specialty" activity, students will be encouraged to explore other activities as part of their commitment to their teams. During each segment of the day participants will have the opportunity to earn points for their team that will add to the running total for the entire event.

    Participants: Rhode Island students GRADES 3-8

    Sports Activities: Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis and Track and Field

    Cultural Arts: Art, Writing/Poetry, Theatre/Dance and Vocal Music

    Recreational Activities: Chess, Field Games, Spelling Bee, Frisbee, Scientific Discovery, Trivia, Volleyball, and more.

    Special Events & Activities: One important objective of the Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games is to offer participants and their families a variety of year-round activities. Activities in 2001 included:
    • State House Reception with RI participants of the 2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games.
    • Performance by Rob the Drummer, who promotes anti-substance abuse through sport, music and the arts.
    • March in the "Parade of Scholars" during the Opening Ceremonies of the World Scholar-Athlete Games at URI Meade Stadium with approximately 2,000 high school students from over 160 countries and all 50 states.
    • Fall Reunion with special guest and leadership workshop.
    • Winter Reunion at the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, including sportsmanship workshop led by URI Head Football Coach, Tim Stowers, followed by a URI Women's Basketball Game and Billy Gilman concert. RISAG participants were treated to a 'Meet and Greet' with Billy Gilman! February 2002.
