2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games

The University of Rhode Island, Kingston and Newport, RI

Mission:
  • To promote understanding, acceptance and friendship among the youth of the world;
  • To establish open, non-political, long-standing relationships among tomorrow's world leaders;
  • To utilize sport and the cultural arts as means of communication and learning rather than competition among nations;
  • To identify and train young people to develop leadership skills and networking strategies as they pursue positions of leadership in business, government, education and other professional fields.

    Concept:
    There are no national teams at the Games. Instead, all scholar-athletes are strategically placed into ethnically- and culturally-diverse groups that take part in either athletic competition or cultural pursuits. For example, a basketball team or writing group will be comprised of individuals from many different countries.

    Participants:
    1993 - More than 1,600 participants, ages 16-19
    1997 - More than 1,900 participants, ages 16-19
    2001 - More than 2,000 participants, ages 15-19

    Countries Represented:
    1993 - 108 countries and all 50 states represented
    1997 - 148 countries and all 50 states represented
    2001 - 151 countries and all 50 states represented

    Sports Programs:
    1993 - basketball, sailing, soccer, tennis (doubles) and volleyball
    1997 - basketball, bridge, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis (doubles), track & field and volleyball
    2001 - baseball, basketball, chess, field hockey (girl's), golf, lacrosse, rugby (boy's), soccer, softball, swimming, tennis (doubles), track & field and volleyball

    Cultural Programs:
    1993 - art, choir, creative-writing and poetry
    1997 - art, choir, dance, symphony, theater and writing/poetry
    2001 - art, choir, culinary arts, dance, symphony, theater and writing/poetry

    Theme Days:
    Educational programs review, in depth, four important world topics. Prominent international speakers address the Games participants and lead them in small group discussions on the topics of:
    1993 - World Environment, World Peace, International Commerce, Substance Abuse and Ethics & Sportsmanship
    1997 - Global Environment, Global Conflict Resolution, World Health, World Hunger & Nutrition and Ethics & Sportsmanship
    2001 - Global Environment, World Peace, World Health, Hunger & Nutrition and Ethics & Sportsmanship

    Special Events:
    1993 - Opening Ceremonies featuring Dionne Warwick, United Nations Day, celebrity guests, Peace Run, Family Day and Closing Ceremonies featuring Aretha Franklin at the Providence Civic Center.
    1997 - Opening Ceremonies featuring the Beach Boys and a fireworks extravaganza, United Nations Day, celebrity guests, Peace Run, Family Day and Closing Ceremonies featuring performances by the World Games choir, symphony and dancers.
    2001 - Opening Ceremonies featuring The Temptations and a fireworks extravaganza, International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, United Nations Day, Peace Run, celebrity guests, Family Night at Misquamicut Beach and Closing Ceremonies featuring performances by the World Games choir, symphony and dancers.
