2002 Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games "Renaissance Experience"

Dates:
July 19-21 and July 29- August 2, 2002

Location:
The University of Rhode Island, Kingston and Rhode Island College, Providence

Mission:
  • To encourage Rhode Island youth to pursue excellence, not only as athletes, but as scholars and artists.
  • To encourage youngsters to explore and undertake new and exciting activities.
  • To provide participants the opportunity to contribute to a team effort.
  • To facilitate the leadership qualities of Rhode Island youth
  • To provide mothers and fathers with important information on sports parenting.

    Concept:
    All participants will contribute to a team effort, as part of either Team Athens or Team Sparta. In addition to their "specialty" activity, students will be encouraged to explore other activities as part of their commitment to their teams. During each segment of the day participants will have the opportunity to earn points for their team that will add to the running total for the entire event.

    Participants: Rhode Island students GRADES 3-8

    Sports Activities: Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis and Track and Field

    Cultural Arts: Art, Writing/Poetry, Theatre/Dance and Vocal Music

    Recreational Activities: Board Games, Kickball, Field Games, Flag-Football, Frisbee, "Mathletics", Scientific Discovery, Spelling Bee, Capture the Flag and much more.

    Special Events & Activities: One important objective of the Rhode Island Scholar-Athlete Games is to offer participants and their families a variety of year-round activities. Activities in 2002 included:
    • State House Reception with RI participants of 2002 European Scholar-Athlete Games.
    • Unveiling of the 2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games Hands for Peace banner at a candlelight ceremony at the Institute for International Sport. June 2002.
    • Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) events at the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame throughout the year.
    • Fall and Winter Reunions with special guests and leadership workshops.
    • National Sportsmanship Day activities. March 2003.
