YOUTH PEACE GLOBAL

AND
WORLD SCHOLAR-ATHLETE GAMES Initiatives of the Institute for International Sport
"Dan Doyle and his team are on an historic mission to world peace. This is one of the most compelling peace initiatives I have seen in years." - General Colin Powell
Overview
The World Youth Peace Summit (WYPS), which includes the World Scholar-Athlete Games (WSAG), will be held in Connecticut, with the University of Connecticut serving as host institution, beginning July 1, 2011. The World Youth Peace Summit's mission is to develop current and former scholar-athletes and scholar-artists from around the world into successful peace advocates. By providing the opportunity to study peace policies through a four-day, intensive series of lectures and workshops, the Summit will furnish participants with practical knowledge of how to develop and implement their own peace initiatives successfully in their home communities.
Summit Schedule
This event will be held in Connecticut over a 9-day period from June 26 to July 4, 2011. The inaugural Summit will have three components:
- the World Scholar-Athlete Games for participants ages 15-19 (June 26-July 1);
- the World Youth Peace Summit for WSAG participants and others ages 20 and older (July 1-4); and,
- the Office of Social Entrepreneurship, which will open at the conclusion of Summit.
All events will be held at UConn and at sites in Greater Hartford and around the State of Connecticut.
Partnership with the University of Connecticut UConn will be the official host institution for the World Scholar-Athlete Games and the World Youth Peace Summit. The Games will be housed on the university's campus, as will various Summit events. As host, UConn will achieve international attention. The Summit corresponds with UConn's long-range academic priorities in the areas of human rights, outreach, engagement, diversity and globalization. The World Youth Peace Summit and UConn are forming an academic partnership to develop the Summit's curriculum.
Summit Curriculum
Two courses, also offered online, will provide students throughout the world with a compelling academic opportunity for college and graduate level courses. The first online course will be offered in the spring semester, 2011. The second online course will be offered in the fall semester, 2011. Through the curriculum, participants will receive leadership training and targeted assistance in social entrepreneurship and development of community-based programs. The World Youth Peace Summit will encourage each participant to prepare a Pathways to Peace proposal, a social action/social entrepreneurship project. UConn's Center for Continuing Studies is overseeing curriculum development. Full details on the two online courses will appear on this website in autumn, 2010.
Summary
Summit participants will return home armed not just with idealism but also the practical knowledge of how to successfully implement their community initiatives. Some Pathways to Peace initiatives may focus on such large scale issues as poverty, nuclear proliferation and the environment. Other initiatives may be community-based, social entrepreneurship programs that foster peace, focus on conflict resolution, promote civil rights, and develop mentoring and youth sports programs. These community leaders of all ages will create a grassroots global network of peace advocates and foster a more peaceful world.
This inspired idea will have a tremendous impact on world peace
for generations to come.
