WYPS Summary

“Dan Doyle and his team are on an historic mission to world peace. This is one of the most compelling peace initiatives I have seen in years.”General Colin Powell

Overview
The World Youth Peace Summit, which includes the World Scholar-Athlete Games, will be held in Connecticut, with the University of Connecticut serving as host institution, beginning June 26, 2011. The World Youth Peace Summit’s mission is to develop current and former scholar-athletes and scholar-artists from around the world into successful peace advocates. By providing the opportunity to study peace policies through a week-long, intensive series of lectures and workshops, the Summit will furnish participants with practical knowledge of how to develop and implement their own peace initiatives successfully in their home communities.

Summit Schedule
This event will be held in Connecticut over a 8-9 day period from June 26 to July 4, 2011. The inaugural Summit will have three components: – World Scholar-Athlete Games – held at UConn, participants aged 15-19, opens June 26 – World Youth Peace Summit – held at UConn, Greater Hartford, sites around State, participants include 2011 WSAG members, others aged 20 and up – Office of Social Entrepreneurship – opens at UConn at the conclusion of Summit

Partnership with the University of Connecticut
UConn will be the official host institution for the World Scholar-Athlete/Scholar-Artist Games and the World Youth Peace Summit. The Games will be housed on the university’s campus, as will various Summit events. As host, UConn will achieve international attention. The Summit corresponds with UConn’s long-range academic priorities in the areas of human rights, outreach, engagement, diversity and globalization. The World Youth Peace Summit and UConn are forming an academic partnership to develop the Summit’s curriculum.

Summit Curriculum
Two academic courses, also offered online, will provide students throughout the world with a compelling academic opportunity for college and graduate level courses. Through the curriculum, participants will receive leadership training and targeted assistance in social entrepreneurship and development of community-based programs. The World Youth Peace Summit will require each participant to prepare a Pathways to Peace proposal - a social action/social entrepreneurship project. UConn’s Center for Continuing Studies is overseeing curriculum development.

Summary
Summit participants will return home armed not just with idealism but also the practical knowledge of how to implement their community initiatives successfully. Some Pathways to Peace initiatives may focus on such large scale issues as poverty, nuclear proliferation and the environment. Other initiatives will be community-based, social entrepreneurship programs that foster peace, such as conflict resolution, youth sports programs, mentoring and civil rights. These young community leaders will create a grassroots global network of peace advocates and foster a more peaceful world.
